Some 100 people attended a marvellously organised and vibrant Summer Garden Party at the Embassy of Uzbekistan on 28 June.

Co-hosted by the Embassy and BUS, His Excellency Ambassador Shaykhov opened the event followed by speeches from BUS Chairman Shirin Akiner and Baroness Alison Suttie.

Demonstrating legendary hospitality the Embassy had kindly arranged for World Cup enthusiasts present to see the England – Belgium match on giant TV screens, when not enticed into the garden by other attractions.

Those present represented business, education, politics, the civil service, family and friends of BUS members, friends from other Central Asian countries and from as far afield as Malaysia.

Tables groaned under copious quantities of plov and other Uzbek delicacies. It was a time to meet up with old friends, and make new ones. It provided a networking opportunity in a relaxed and hospitable atmosphere. Students present had a chance to meet professionals and chat about career prospects. At least one grasped the opportunity to discuss fashion and get tips for entering this highly competitive business.

Young Uzbek women gave us a wonderful fashion show and elegant dancing, with superb singing from Guljahon Hurramova. And Uzbekistan Airways contributed a giant cake.

A very successful event to cap a very successful year for BUS.
