Members of the British-Uzbek Society are invited to join a forthcoming webinar featuring Sir Suma Chakrabarti, who will provide his assessment of efforts to reform the diverse economy of Uzbekistan. The webinar will take place via Zoom on Wednesday March 31 from 14:00 to 15:00 BST (18:00 to 19:00 UST).
Sir Suma served as president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development from 2012 to 2020, during which time he oversaw a major geographic expansion of the bank’s activities, including in Central Asia. In October 2020, he was appointed Special Advisor to the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev. In this role, Sir Suma provides independent reviews to the Uzbek president on issues related to economic reforms.
During this webinar, which will be held under Chatham House rule, Sir Suma will preview his assessment of the reform agenda in Uzbekistan and a set of new recommendations recently prepared for consideration by the Government of Uzbekistan. These recommendations pertain to monetary, fiscal, trade and investment, and general development policies.
Following an initial presentation by Sir Suma, a moderated discussion will be led by Louis Skyner, Chairman of the British-Uzbek Society and Oybek Shaykhov, Secretary General of the Europe-Uzbekistan Association for Economic Cooperation (EUROUZ). Audience members will be invited to submit questions during a Q&A session.
